Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga - TCTSY

A Body-Based Approach to Healing Trauma

Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an evidence-based intervention for complex trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Like EMDR, IFS, CPT, or CBT, TCTSY is a scientifically validated model delivered by trained facilitators. What makes TCTSY unique is its focus on interoception — the awareness of internal physical sensations — as a pathway toward restoring a felt sense of safety in one’s body and in relationship to others.

TCTSY was developed by David Emerson in collaboration with Bessel van der Kolk and is grounded in decades of trauma research.

What a TCTSY Session Feels Like

TCTSY sessions are slow, gentle, and grounded in choice.

There is a steady rhythm of:

  • Engaging

  • Integrating

  • Resting

You may notice that language is offered invitationally. Rather than being told what to do, you are offered options — both within movements and between movements.

The intention is to support you in:

  • Reconnecting with your body safely

  • Noticing sensations without judgment

  • Practicing choice in the present moment

  • Rebuilding a sense of agency

You are always in control of your body. Everything is optional.

The Approach

TCTSY uses simple Hatha yoga forms as a way to access the body, functioning as a bottom-up approach to trauma healing. Rather than focusing on changing thoughts first, this work supports nervous system regulation through embodied awareness.

There is:

  • No pressure to achieve “correct alignment”

  • No physical assists

  • No required props

  • No prior yoga experience needed

You will receive frequent reminders that there is no right or wrong way to participate. Taking breaks, skipping movements, or adapting forms to your needs is always welcome.

Come exactly as you are.

Working Together

TCTSY is offered in:

  • One-on-one sessions

  • Small group sessions

Before beginning, we schedule a brief introductory meeting (video, phone, or text) to ensure the approach feels appropriate and supportive for you.
